What is in a name? That has been an issue for me my whole life. Some names I just don't understand. My Mother's name is Margaret Rose; she goes by Peg. My Fathers name is Robert Creighton; he goes by Bob. WHAT? I just don't get that. My parents wanted to make sure that we had a name that couldn't have a nickname. My sister is named after my maternal grandmother, Nora Mary. I was suppose to be named after my paternal grandmother. She forbid that! THANK YOU Geraldine Weppner Creighton Steffan. My parents asked her what name she liked. GRETCHEN it was. I clearly remember being in kindergarten at Holy Name Of Mary. We had to write our names on every paper. I sat next to Amy. She had it easy. When my brother was born we sat in the hospital debating names for several days. Doug; no, then you get "Dougie" and that sounds like Doggy. Robert? No, Grandpa is Robert, Dad is Robert so we would have "Big Bob", "Little Bob" and "Baby Bobbie". Much conversation continued and we ended up with Mark. Shane was suppose to be named Dominic after his paternal grandfather. Not sure how we went from Italian to Irish! We named Jack after Shane's maternal grandfather. Jack's middle name is Robert (so is Shane's and Mark's) after both of Jack's grandfathers. Claire is just a name I love. Her middle name is Margaret after my mother. Claire's initials are the same as Shane's mother (CMC) Cheryl Merideth. I know many people who didn't much like their name at some point. I got really tired of hearing about German Sheppards named Gretchen! I must say that I am very grateful to have an uncommon name.

I'm with you- I like names that are recognizable but less common. In my fam, my parents are both LCR, so each of us got different initials, but names that could be nick-named easily. And Marleah came from Mary and Harley- Matt's great somebodies and Leah, a girl's name we like. We thought she'd be Marley or Leah, but it never fit.
