In 2001 I started to have some troubling medical issues that upset me, the most alarming of which was severe dizziness when I stood up. I have never fainted but would loose my sight for 15-45 seconds. It was particularly bad when getting out of bed or standing after crouching or kneeling on the ground. I felt as though I would fall or pass out. It continued so I saw my doctor who promptly ran a whole gamut of tests including a Doppler study of my carotid arteries, cat scans, MRI, blood work and others. Nothing showed on any test. For years I have been dealing with the lightheaded dizzy spells, fatigue, excessive thirst, cold extremities and a few others. During this time my sister has had the same symptoms. At first I worried that I would have symptoms while driving or in a serious situation. That never happened for either of us, so we just dealt with it. My sister recently went through testing at the Mayo Clinic for these symptoms and we finally have a name for all of this; Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. At first I was excited but then learned that the "treatment" is stuff we already do. BUMMER. So I will continue to carry a drink wherever I go since that was their #1 recommendation. It is not medically dangerous which is a relief because on a few occasions I wondered if I might be starting to have a stroke or heart attack. So, good and bad all in one.
